BearGood: A Benefit Concert for Addiction Care

On May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, Mr Bear Netherlands 2025 is hosting a benefit concert at the Singelkerk in Amsterdam to break the taboo surrounding (party) drug addiction within the LGBTQIA+ community. After losing his partner to drugs two years ago, Arthur wants to help others still battling addiction.

With this concert, Arthur is raising funds for Choices Support Center in Amsterdam, which provides support for addiction and sexual health. All proceeds will go to this community organization.

Program

At Amsterdam’s Singelkerk, the audience can listen to the WesterHarmonie concert. Expect also some surprising performances by special guests from the community. The program brings together music from all corners of the world and eras, united by three themes: queer identity, addiction, and the bear community.

From A Tribute to Amy Winehouse and Cabaret—highlighting the rawness and glamour of addiction and freedom—to The Bare Necessities, a nod to the queer community, and The Teddy Bears’ Picnic, evoking innocence and comfort. Shaffy and Just a Closer Walk with Thee add a personal, sometimes spiritual layer, while Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Adagio for Strings capture moments of longing, remembrance, and hope. With Whispers from Beyond a moving tribute is paid to a lost friend.
Together, they create a musical journey through freedom, contentment, and memory.

During the intermission, the orchestra will offer delicious cakes and sweets for sale. Every purchase directly supports addiction care, specifically Choices Support Center in Amsterdam. This community organization helps vulnerable people, especially LGBTQ+ individuals, make safe and conscious choices. They provide psychological and social support for mental health, addiction, and sexual health, aiming to reduce risky behavior and improve the well-being and stability of their clients.

Location

The Singelkerk, a Baptist church built in 1839, is a unique example of a “hidden church”—a church not recognizable as such from the street.

What is a ‘bear’?

Painting by Jacques Donnay.

A bear is more than just an animal—it’s a proud identity within the LGBTQIA+ community. In the 1970s, the beauty ideal in the American gay community often focused on slim, young, muscular, and hairless men. Those who didn’t fit this image sometimes felt excluded. In response, “less attractive” men came together to form the bear community. Forty years later, this group has become an important and beloved part of gay culture. Their message is clear: be proud of who you are, even if you don’t fit the “perfect” image. Mental health and self-acceptance are central, and they are known for their warm, cuddly nature.

Annual Mister Bear elections are held in various countries. During these events, an ambassador is chosen to present a project or vision to raise funds for a charity of their choice. In June 2025, Arthur was crowned Mr Bear Netherlands 2025.

Custom Concerts

WesterHarmonie consists of approximately 35 woodwind, brass, and percussion players with diverse musical backgrounds. Many members also play in other ensembles, such as chamber orchestras, wind quintets, street orchestras, or big bands. The musicians range in age from around 25 to 60+, but they all share one trait: a love for playing music with a serious touch. As a symphonic wind orchestra, this amateur ensemble delivers surprising performances at various locations, including outdoor venues.
